First day of SDs at HT and a bit of a rant...

I just have to say that I love to share the wealth, that's why I have this blog....BUT, ever since the airing of Extreme Couponing people have come out of the wood works to save some cash. Still, totally fine with me. However, I do have a problem with people working the system. I saw a lady yesterday with her husband and teenage son dividing and dispersing items and handing out VIC cards to each of them. They are obviously in one household, and using 3 different cards (against store policy). I know, you're probably thinking "she's just mad because she probably didn't get some of the items she wanted". YES, you're right! She had 6 packs of Bounty napkins and 6 boxes of the Lance Cracker things that I wanted. Darn it! Rant over, I feel better now:)

When stock is out, get a rain check (RC) because they never expire. Also ask when the delivery trucks get in. Be sure to ask about a specific truck because deliveries come in different days. For instance, grocery items come in on Thursdays at my store but frozen items don't come in until Mondays.

We went to the Farmer's Market on Saturday and I scored 1 lb of kale and mustard greens, a head of cabbage, a bundle of collards, 2 bundles of spring onions and 3 big tomatoes for $7. I love spring veggie season!

Quick and easy recipe for dark greens... (I will measure this as my great grandma would; recipe courtesy of Laura Shewmon)

Chop and cook 1 large onion

Slice 1 package of button mushrooms

Add them to a large wok and cook til you smell 'em

Add a heaping mound of washed and de-ribbed greens

Cook them down until about half the volume

Add balsamic vinegar, salt, and pepper

You can add a source of fat if you feel naughty. The pork variety is really yummy;)

Don't worry, I too am guilty of picking up what I need at Harris Teeter on a whim without thinking that it may be more affordable at a specialty store. We generally think that the "novelty" of an item makes it more expensive at a specialty store. NOT THE CASE!

Over lunch, I generally discuss....yep....FOOD and what I'm gonna make for dinner that night. I was discussing how upset I was that "my" Harris Teeter did not have bean sprouts, and my friend Laura recommended that I go to the S-Mart Asian Supermarket in Cary. Now I have seen this store, but was a bit skeptical to go in and shop. Well, last night I went and I was like a kid in a candy store.

My stirfry was becoming very run-of-the-mill, so I wanted to add a few items to spruce it up. I went in with intentions of getting bean sprouts and baby bok choy, needless to say I left with a whole bag of items. I was floored at how much lower the prices are compared to the general market. For instance, Sriracha "rooster sauce" is $4.79 for 17 oz bottle at HT. At the S-Mart it was $1.88 for 28 oz!!! WHAT, how could I have not been shopping here all along?!?

My bag of goodies consisted of a HUGE bottle of sweet chili sauce ($1.99), sesame oil ($2.99), Snow peas ($1.37), 6 baby bok choy ($2.32), and almost 1 lb of bean sprouts (53¢) all for $9.38.

At HT, these would have cost me over $23. The breakdown...chili sauce ($3.29, for much smaller bottle), HT brand sesame oil ($3.29), snow peas ($3.99), baby bok choy ($1.87 each), and bean sprouts (at other HT stores are 99¢/lb).

"How do you save so much money on groceries? There are never coupons for the things that I like."

Answer: As a hard-core couponer, it's really hard to be brand-loyal. If you have a list of a few certain items that you HAVE to have, then you can get away with that. For the most part, the coupons and specials available to me dictate what I buy. When something that I really love puts out a coupon or goes on sale, I will sometimes buy some coupons online (ebay) to have in the future (pending expiration date). You can get 10 coupons for about $1, that are worth $10-$25 in value.

I always buy yogurt, but I buy whatever is on sale and has a coupon. Never pay more than $1 for a 6-pack of YoPlait YoPlus or Activia (these two always have coupons out), and during super doubles they're only pennies. I stock up on staples (pasta, rice, beans, can goods, etc.) when it's on sale AND has a coupon.

Buying whatever is on sale also allows for me to mix it up a bit. I love to cook, and making meals out of what I can get on sale is the most fun of it. It makes going out to eat hard, because we'll pay for two date-nights out what I spend on groceries in a month.

Combining sales, coupons, and catalinas make these items a BIG money maker (MM).

OEP, Buy 6 items (shells, dinner kits, seasonings, refried beans, or heat & serve side dishes) and get a $3 coupon for off your next order (oyno). Seasoning packets are 79¢, shells are $1.50, Dinner kits are $2, refried beans are $1.25.
